Billy is a relatively normal teen with super powers. At school Billy was, he was one of the geeks at his school and the out ‘gay’ kid. He never tried to act like someone he wasn’t and fit in with the crowd. Billy has always stayed true to himself no matter what the situation. Billy also has a great sense of humour, it’s often based on his fanboy knowledge. In a later comics, Billy dresses his team and Magneto as the Von Trapp Family singers from the Sound of Music, as a disguise rather than dressing them as traditional peasants

Billy is fiercely loyal and loving in relationships whether they are of a family, friendship or lover’s nature. When any of them are in trouble he will leap into help with everything he has and is on their side, no matter what he is told. He remains chipper and upbeat and can raise the optimism of those around him. However, he does lack some social skill and doesn’t always notice when his friends are upset or he is going to make them upset. When he left for Latervia, he left a tongue in cheek note for Teddy, without a thought of how Teddy would feel when he woke up and found that the bed was empty.


As mentioned Billy leaps into help someone in trouble. When there is trouble Billy reacts in He wades into battles without a thought for the consequences for himself or other people. When Billy’s powers first developed, he had decided to confront Kesler who was bullying another kid. His only thought was to save the other kid. He almost killed Kesley with a lightning strike. Since then Billy has demonstrated the same impulsiveness in battle. He has waded in without a plan, and the spells he has cast has been based on immediate need e.g. breaking Kang’s force field rather than based on a thought-out plan. This has caused him to use spells he hasn’t meant to like he did against the Son of the Serpents.

When Billy stops to consider the consequences of his spells or thinks about what he capable of, he is a lot less confident in himself and his actions. The lack of self confidence stemmed from high school. Like a lot of people in high school, who were more individual and not part of the crowd; he got bullied by one of the school bullies. John Kesler picked on him and at least once, left him with a bruised and bloody face. Billy lacked the strength and confidence to deal with the with the bullying head on. Instead, he used his intelligence to avoid the bully were possible. This was the same bully that Billy later took on to protect another boy.

His lack of self confidence caused him to skirt around addressing his powers and other things head on. He has a nervous energy about him and tends to ramble when he talks. He uses his powers in a limited way, unless it is in the heat of battle or unless someone in encouraging him. It was Teddy who helped him develop the mantra from his mum’s self help guide and assured him he could do spells. Over time the relationship with Teddy has grounded Billy and made him more confident. As their relationship develops, Billy becomes more confident in himself and he is more comfortable weighing in on decisions and taking a more leading role in the Young Avengers.

In summary, Billy Kaplan is fanboy and a superhero, he wades into fights to help people and protect the people that he loves. In his private life, he doubts himself, and does worry about what his powers might cause him to do.

Hi, everyone. Billy here, not Billy the plant killer, Billy the plant saver. [Billy is holding out a plant towards the video as proof.] See the leaves on this plant were drooping and I fixed it, just like I did for the other plant. It’s no biggie. The leaves weren’t yellow or eaten by slugs or anything.

[He puts the plant down on the window sill and finally takes a breath between his words.]

Besides a little magic works better than plant food right? It’s more exciting and it doesn’t take as long to have an effect. And you can give the plant too much food while there is no such thing as too much magic. You don’t have to be a kid to like magic.

Being the life and soul of the party was what Billy was good at. He never held back on his opinions or hid what he was from people. They could take him or leave him. However something inside him had snapped him with Cassie’s death. He had realised that nothing was without a price, that no matter how good they were, they could lose so easily.

It was dark place that Billy went to when he thought about her and how he had brought about her death. There had been days he had wanted to give up on everything and do nothing. Only Teddy had been able to pull him through it. Billy lifted his head from the comic and smiled at Teddy across the room. Teddy was what he had to live for. When they got married one day and adopted a kid they could call it Cassie and tell her all about the person she was named after. it was a dream that would happen but, it gave Billy something to cling onto and it let him bounce again.

Getting the bounce back made him all the more fidgety. They were in a new place, and there were will so many places to explore. He wanted to get out and see what he could. It was better than sitting here and beginning to brood. He knew Teddy was the same, he saw his mouth downturn when he sat silent for too long.

He tossed his comic at Teddy’s head. “Come on T, we’ve finished a mountain of comics and I need a break, so we can talk about them!” The smile he gave was kept especially for Teddy, it was softer, warmer and a lot more relaxed.

[Why do you want to play this character in Somarium?] Because everyone here seems so lovely! Billy is also a giant geek and he is going to love being able to peep into dreams of all the cool people.
